Greetings, readers! I am Marcos Kano, the Student Union of Nevada State High School (SUNSHS) Executive Chair. Although Nevada State High School students are on summer break in June and July, our ambitious Renegades like to keep busy. To get a peek at what they are up to, I spent some time interviewing current students like myself. I hope you enjoy!
Renegades on Summer Break
Over the summer, some students at Nevada State High School decide to explore the city or travel around the world. Others choose to volunteer at local organizations or rack up college credits with summer courses. The possibilities are endless, especially because NSHS offered students the opportunity to take a free college course this summer. I spoke with Nathan from the Southwest Campus to see what he has been up to over the break. He stated, “My summer has been like any typical summer. I went to the pool with some friends, and we are planning a picnic for later this month. I haven’t had time to volunteer because I am busy with my summer course. I decided to take Communications 101. Overall, it has been a typical–but still cool–summer.” Jada Lok, another rising senior from the Henderson: Flagship Campus, also took COM 101 this summer. Similarly, I spent my time taking English Lit and Communications. I guess Renegade minds think alike!
Classes Opportunities
After speaking with my fellow Renegades, I discovered that many of them decided to focus on their 4-week summer courses the first month of summer break. Taking an additional course over the summer allows students to get one step closer to their associate degrees. Many students at NSHS aim to earn their AA degree, or 60 credits, by the time they graduate high school. While many students took advantage of a free summer course in the first session, others took a much-deserved break and will start a class in July for session two. It is amazing to see that students at Nevada State High School are so committed to their academics that they give up a part of their summer to work on college classes. It is also amazing that Nevada State High School gives such opportunities to us. Every student I spoke with was very grateful for their summer course reimbursement.
Closing Out the Summer
To close out the summer, many students plan on going on vacation. However, another class that is a hot topic for the second session of summer courses is psychology. Well, if anyone can fit in both, it is a NSHS Renegade! By this time of the year, most students are wrapping up their general education requirements for their associate degrees and are exploring other social science courses that intrigue them. Next semester, rising seniors will be able to focus their attention on their future college majors, which is very exciting.

As SUNSHS Chair, I am happy to hear such great news from my fellow students. However, I’d love to hear more!
