How can you keep students socially engaged while navigating virtual learning during a global pandemic? Nevada State High School has made it happen. Nevada State High School (NSHS) is a public charter school for 11th and 12th grade students in Nevada. With 8 campuses and over 1,000 students across the state, NSHS has worked to connect students while maintaining social distancing guidelines.
Keeping Students Busy
At NSHS, staff encourages students to grow personally, academically, and socially. Students earn 10 social points per term by participating in their choice of social events. Following campus shutdowns, NSHS continued social events virtually, offering over 60 events in the Fall 2021 term! From virtual holiday parties to ACT Boot Camps, students were able to connect, celebrate, and engage with one another safely from home.
Exciting and Safe Social Events
Our Fall 2021 Virtual Talent Show was a huge success! Our talented students auditioned to perform virtually for their peers. Acts included singing, martial arts, baile folklorico, guitar, and cello performances. We were also able to stream videos of their talents, from gymnastic tumbling and car drifting to golfing.
“The NSHS Talent Show went way above my expectations. We had 30 students submit video auditions and were able to put on a unique experience to show off our students’ talents. From music to gymnastics to golfing, we were able to capture their amazing abilities!” -Ms. Jones, DSA, Summerlin/Northwest
Staff were also able to join the fun! Ms. James, the NSHS Marketing & Engagement Director, performed a hip hop dance routine and Ms. Vega, our Northwest EAC, performed a musical medley, singing and playing the guitar! Students were able to watch live on Zoom and cheer on their peers with emoji and chat features.
The fun has continued into the Spring 2021 term, with over 40 social events on the calendar. While many events are still fully virtual, NSHS has also incorporated socially distanced in-person events this semester. Spring events include virtual cooking and painting lessons, yoga and stress management sessions, and a Parent in Partnership (PiP) Financial Planning Workshop.
Prom 2021 was held on March 5th at the Emerald at Queensridge. With the theme Enchanted Forest, students were gifted flower and ivy crowns upon arrival. For this event, students were able to dance the night away while adhering to State guidelines.
“Prom was an enchanting experience where students were able to safely enjoy a fun night!” – Ms. Holguin, EAC, Downtown
Our 2021 Prom Court was named, and students were able to leave with great new memories (and the very popular butterfly mason jar centerpieces).
Socially Distanced Does Not Mean Anti-social
While this school year has been far from normal, Nevada State High School has adapted to keep their students safe and socially engaged. Socially distanced does not mean anti-social. NSHS Staff is committed to offering a diverse and exciting lineup of events for students each term, whether virtual or in-person.
