Remedial courses can be stressful, but with commitment and practice you can test out. Remedial Math courses are classes that help students review and understand a certain level of math before moving on to a college level class. You can test out of remedial with your ACT or SAT math scores, by passing a certain level of math, or by placing in college math through Accuplacer. Here are five ways to prepare for testing out of remedial math!
Take Practice Tests
Practice tests are important because it helps you work on your test taking skills, and you can identify what areas you need to focus on the most. There is a curriculum called EdReady that includes modules to help learn the material that can appear on placement tests. It’s best to study EdReady or any other placement curriculums at least three times a week until you are fully prepared to take the placement test.
Take your Placement Tests
Placement tests are taken to assess the level of knowledge on a specific subject a student has; typically  Math and English are the most popular subjects that require a placement test. Students have several opportunities to take the placement test. If you are not satisfied with your results, plan on practicing on the material that you did not know or understand. After studying the material, schedule a new date to retake test to improve your score.
Review your Mistakes
Focus on what you don’t know! Yes, it is overwhelming checking your mistakes but evaluating your work can help with understanding exactly what needs to be learned. Reviewing your work consistently will ensure your work is correct next time, and it will help you understand how to solve the problem.
Work with a Tutor
Having one-on-one time with a tutor is super helpful because you can ask questions and work on any challenging problems step-by-step. The tutor will go over any math problems clearly by going over how to properly solve and understand the given question.
Do your Homework
If you are currently enrolled in a remedial class be sure to do your homework! Review the math homework and practice the material discussed in class. This will prepare you for a test retake or for the next math level!
