Name: Laura Calkins
Grade: 12
Why did you choose to attend Nevada State High School (NSHS)? I chose to attend Nevada State High School so I could get a head start on my college education. I am planning on getting a Doctorate in Psychology and wanted to knock out two years of my schooling.
Describe a great experience you’ve had at NSHS. One great experience I have had at Nevada State High School was last year’s prom. Prom was super fun and it was a great time to be with my friends. I loved the music and being able to see everyone dressed up. I would tell everyone to go to prom this year — it is definitely a must!
What has been your greatest challenge at the school? What have you learned that’s made a difference to you? My greatest challenge at Nevada State was learning how to fit into a college class where many of the students were older than me and had more life experience. I felt out of place at times and did not think I could contribute to class discussions. After a while, I learned how to make friends in my college classes and I now share my thoughts and ideas in class discussions.
What are your plans for after graduation? I have been accepted into Southern Virginia University and am planning on attending next fall. I will be double majoring in Psychology and in Family and Child Development with a minor in Music.
What piece of advice would you share with new NSHS students? Advice I would share with new students is to make friends both in your college classes and with high school students at Nevada State. Friends can make the experience more enjoyable, as well as help you stay on track with your classes.
Tell us about your role as the President of the Student Union of Nevada State High School (SUNSHS). What are your responsibilities? As President of the Student Union of Nevada State High School (SUNSHS), I oversee the Prom and Yearbook Committees, as well as a council of representatives. SUNSHS plans social point activities and spirit days, and we are here to help students make friends and feel more comfortable at school. My personal responsibilities are to make sure both the prom and yearbook are completed and to run my council.
Why did you choose to join SUNSHS? I chose to join SUNSHS because I was in Student Council at my old high school and loved it. I felt like I could make a difference at the school, and I love planning events. It helped me to make new friends and be a part of something. I did not think I would end up as the President of SUNSHS, but I am happy that I joined and love every minute of it.
Who inspires you? One person that inspires me is Ludwig van Beethoven. He is one of the most influential musicians even though he went deaf. I love playing his pieces on the piano and knowing that he wrote his songs without hearing them. Beethoven inspires me and my love for music.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? If I could travel anywhere in the world, I would want to go to Peru. I would love to see Machu Picchu and Lima. Also, alpacas are my favorite animal and they are originally from Peru!
