Scared but Prepared
Scared, but Prepared
Starting at Nevada State High School
Nevada Start High School has not only provided me with numerous academic opportunities, by also a new gateway into the start of my career with programs such as study skills, transitions, and introduction to college, I’m allowed insight into my future. Although I still have a long way to go, NSHS has prepared me so I know which journey my life is going to embark on.
One of those classes which has helped me the most was study skills because it forced you to get down to business and focus on yourself and you academics. It helped me a lot with completing my homework and staying on task. These qualities are vital when obtaining a stable career because punctuality alongside responsibility shows professionalism and can benefit any employer. Study skills helped me realize how important cooperation is with classmates and administration. When all entities come together and form a system that flows harmoniously, everyone benefits. This also opened my eyes to any future experiences that might not work at first, but eventually pick back up and move forward.
Once I enrolled, I was immediately assigned tasks to stay on top. Resumes and mock interviews (with community business leaders) were only slightly intimidating at first, but as we go closer to the actual interview, I felt prepared and confident in my abilities. Thanks to the help of NSHS staff I was ready with a portfolio in one hand and an amazing resume in the other. One of my biggest achievements to this day is winning both of the interview awards ($50 each), not because of the money, but because I felt accomplished and proud. That experience made me look at my career choice through a different lens due to the fact that I had now had direct insight to the professional world.
Transitions was another class that scared me at first, but once I warmed up to the schedule, things took a turn. Going to UNLV alone made me feel mature and intelligent and on top of it. I was overwhelmed with the amount of people I made friends with. These seem like small accomplishments, but I felt comfortable where I was and to me that’s one of the most important aspects when entering into a new career. It’s hard to learn responsibility when you’re barely able to drive a car, but I felt comfort from NSHS and achieved one of the most crucial and significant qualities in the world of careers – preparation. Despite my tendency to procrastinate, I do believe I have grown into a student who is prepared for anything and that is the biggest reward I could ever ask for.
I may still be young and naive, but I’m comfortable with my career path and the steps I must take to reach my goals. NSHS has composed a new opportunities for me which has benefited me for the better.
